Short answer: keep a short Bali trip simple. One main base is the default for 4–5 DAYS. Split Ubud + coast only when both are genuine priorities and the extra hotel move is worth it.

How many bases?
3 DAYS
Use one base and treat other areas as selective outings. Do not spend a short trip moving luggage around the island.
4–5 DAYS
Default: one main base.
Choose the base that matches the trip:
- Ubud for culture, rice fields, cafés and an inland feel.
- Seminyak or Canggu for beach, dining and a more social stay.
- Sanur or Nusa Dua for an easier resort or family-oriented base.
- Uluwatu when cliffs, sunsets and the south are the main focus.
Five-day exception: a Ubud + coast split is reasonable only if both sides of Bali are central to the trip and you are comfortable paying the time cost of a hotel change. It is not mandatory.
6–7 DAYS
A two-base trip becomes the stronger first-timer pattern.
A clear example is Ubud + one beach area. Add rice terraces, temples, cafés, beach time and a sunset plan without turning every half-day into a transfer.
8–10 DAYS
Keep the two-base core, then add one meaningful extension or outing if it supports the trip style—such as a quieter area, island day or waterfall day.
Every area you visit does not need its own hotel.
2 WEEKS
A slower third area or island stay becomes much easier to justify. Sidemen, Munduk, Amed, Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida make more sense here than in a compressed first trip.
Use season as broad context, not a precision calendar
Official Indonesia tourism guidance describes Bali broadly as:
- drier: roughly April to October
- wetter: roughly November to March
Those are planning patterns, not promises. Indonesia's meteorological agency also notes that seasonal timing can vary from normal.
Treat wet-season, shoulder-season and “best month” labels as broad context, not fixed boundaries or weather guarantees.
Choose the base by trip style
- Culture and inland scenery: Ubud.
- Dining and social beach stay: Seminyak or Canggu.
- Cliffs and sunsets: Uluwatu.
- Slower or resort-focused coast: Sanur or Nusa Dua.
- Longer slow trip: Sidemen, Munduk or Amed.
Decision rule
- Protect simplicity on 3–5 DAYS.
- Use two bases from 6–7 DAYS when both inland Bali and the coast matter.
- Add more geography only when 8–10 DAYS or longer gives it breathing room.
- Add a base only when it improves the trip, not simply to include another area.
