Short answer: China is too large for a short first trip to be a country-wide checklist. Choose one region or a focused city group first; add long-distance stops only when the trip length supports them.
In this guide
Build the route by trip length
5–7 DAYS
Start with one major city plus one nearby side trip or local extension.
Examples include:
- Shanghai + Hangzhou or Suzhou
- Beijing + Great Wall
- Chengdu + pandas and food
- Guangzhou + a nearby city stay
8–10 DAYS
A classic first-trip sequence can become credible:
Shanghai → Hangzhou / Suzhou → Beijing
or
Beijing → Xi’an → Chengdu
10–14 DAYS
Add another major stop only when it strengthens the theme:
Shanghai → Hangzhou / Suzhou → Beijing → Xi’an
or
Beijing → Xi’an → Chengdu → Chongqing
For a scenery-first trip, consider:
Kunming → Dali → Lijiang → Shangri-La
2+ WEEKS
Instead of endlessly adding cities, deepen one region. Consider Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Xinjiang or Zhangjiajie as longer-trip directions.
These are trip-length bands, not usable-day conversions.
Use season as a second filter
China's climate is genuinely regional. Chinese government climate reporting describes a complex national pattern: monsoon climates dominate much of the east, the northwest is more continental and dry, and the Tibetan Plateau has a high-altitude climate.
Choose timing for the actual regions on your route, rather than one national month matrix.
Use April–May and September–October as a broad first-timer planning starting point, not a guarantee across China. After choosing the route, check the actual destinations and elevations.
Choose by travel priority
- History: Beijing and Xi’an.
- Modern city + nearby variety: Shanghai with Suzhou or Hangzhou.
- Food and relaxed city culture: Chengdu, with Chongqing if time supports it.
- Scenery and slower regional depth: Yunnan or another focused region.
Long-distance transfers should earn their place. A destination can be excellent and still be the wrong addition to a short route.
Keep month-by-month advice route-specific
There is no single month-by-month rule for the whole country. November needs destination-specific planning too; do not assume a uniform seasonal rating.
Decision rule
- 5–7 DAYS: one focused city group.
- 8–10 DAYS: one classic multi-city sequence.
- 10–14 DAYS: a broader sequence or a deeper scenic route.
- 2+ WEEKS: deepen a region rather than chasing the whole country.
