Short answer: Da Nang is the practical beach-and-arrival base; Hoi An is the slower heritage-and-evening base. A short trip does not automatically need two hotels.
In this guide
Choose the base by what matters most
Da Nang
Choose Da Nang when you value:
- airport and arrival convenience
- beach and city comfort
- seafood and cafés
- an easy practical base for nearby outings
Hoi An
Choose Hoi An when you value:
- lantern evenings
- old-town walks
- riverside cafés
- tailoring, food and slower mornings
- a more atmospheric heritage stay
How to split the trip
3–4 DAYS
One base can be enough.
Stay in Da Nang if arrival/departure convenience and beach time matter more. Stay in Hoi An if the old-town evenings are the core experience.
Split the trip only if experiencing both places after dark matters enough to justify a hotel move. Keep day trips selective.
Plan the nights around your actual arrival, departure and hotel move; the day band does not prescribe a fixed night allocation.
5–6 DAYS
A two-base trip becomes easier to justify.
Use Da Nang for beach/city convenience and Hoi An for atmosphere. Keep the pace light enough for one larger outing or countryside block without turning every day into an excursion.
7–8 DAYS
A slower two-base trip works well. Add one or two larger outings only if they match the group's priorities and the weather cooperates.
Treat Ba Na Hills as a separate larger outing, My Son as a culture block, and Cham Islands as weather- and sea-condition dependent.
October needs context
Do not assume September–October is uniformly easier: October–January can bring more rain or storms.
October needs more nuance than a simple good/bad label.
Official tourism sources describe Da Nang's rainy period as beginning around late summer or early autumn and show rainfall concentrating around October and November. Hoi An's official tourism guidance also warns of rainy days and storms from October to January.
For an October trip, protect flexibility for beach, island, mountain and other outdoor plans. That does not mean every October day will be poor.
Stay-area logic
In Da Nang, beachside areas work well for beach-focused stays; the Han River / city-centre side suits city convenience.
In Hoi An, stay near the Ancient Town for first-trip access, or choose quieter riverside lanes or the An Bang side when a slower stay matters more.
Decision rule
- On 3–4 DAYS, choose one base unless the second overnight experience is important.
- On 5–6 DAYS, a two-base split becomes much more comfortable.
- On 7–8 DAYS, slow down and add outings selectively.
- Keep days and nights distinct, and do not treat October as a weather guarantee.
