Short answer
Keep one Paris base for the full trip, protect Versailles as Day 4, and keep Day 6 genuinely flexible instead of using every day for another major outing.
The strongest sequence is: arrival → classic Paris → Louvre/Tuileries → Versailles → Montmartre/Marais → flexible day → light departure day.

The 7-day sequence
| Day | Role | Practical focus |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival | Check in and keep the first evening light: a nearby Seine or neighbourhood walk, dinner and recovery. Budget roughly 2–3 HOURS. |
| Day 2 | Classic Paris | Eiffel-area views, river-side walking and selected classic sights. Choose views and atmosphere rather than forcing every interior. |
| Day 3 | Louvre + central Paris | Use one major museum as the anchor, then Tuileries / Palais Royal / a café or one optional smaller addition. The Louvre block is roughly 2–3 HOURS for a first visit. |
| Day 4 | Versailles | Protect this as the trip’s full-day excursion. Allow roughly 5–7 HOURS for the estate, with extended garden/estate areas optional by energy and conditions. |
| Day 5 | Montmartre + Marais | Split the day between the two neighbourhoods, with food and café time between them. Give each area roughly 2–3 HOURS rather than an all-day sprint. |
| Day 6 | Flexible | Slow Paris, a garden-led outing, or one longer day trip if the travel burden is genuinely comfortable. |
| Day 7 | Departure / slow morning | Breakfast, a short walk, last shopping or one light missed item before the station/airport buffer. |
Use Day 6 as the pressure valve
Day 6 is deliberately not a compulsory second major excursion.
Choose among three shapes:
Slow Paris: cafés, Luxembourg / Saint-Germain-style neighbourhood time, passages, shopping, a missed museum or a relaxed Seine block.
Garden-led main day: a seasonal garden-style outing can work when that is a real priority and the rest of the week is not already overloaded.
Longer castle / regional outing: use a full-day block only when long travel is comfortable and Day 7 can stay light.
For most first-timers, the stable lesson is simple: Versailles is the protected excursion; Day 6 is optional depth, not pressure to leave Paris again.
Shorter and longer versions
| Trip length | Route shape |
|---|---|
| 5 DAYS | Arrival → classic Paris → Louvre/Tuileries → Versailles OR Montmartre/Marais → flex/departure. |
| 7 DAYS | Use the complete Paris-base route above. |
| 8–10 DAYS | Add one or two meaningful blocks: more Paris depth, a garden outing, a Loire-style castle block, Normandy-style history/coast, or additional café/museum time. |
| 10–14 DAYS | Add ONE region properly—for example Loire, Normandy, Alsace, Provence or the Riviera—rather than collecting several regions. |
Final decision
For seven days, one Paris base + one full Versailles day + one truly flexible day gives the trip more depth than adding another hotel or another long excursion.
Protect the day sequence, then adjust individual sights around tickets, weather, walking pace and energy.
