Short answer
Protect the Lima + Sacred Valley + Machu Picchu + Cusco core first. Then use the 8 / 10 / 12 / 14-day route framework to decide whether Lake Titicaca, Arequipa / Colca, both—or neither—belong.
These are route-day counts, not nights or transfer-free sightseeing days.
In this guide
8 DAYS: protect the first-timer core
The first-timer core is:
Lima → Sacred Valley → Machu Picchu → Cusco → final gateway
The important decision is not to add a southern branch before this core has enough room.
The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu portion is a booking-dependent part of the trip, so keep the surrounding route simple rather than layering extra moves on top of it.
10 DAYS: choose ONE southern branch
Lake Titicaca
Choose the Titicaca branch when the lake and highland atmosphere are a major priority.
It adds another substantial regional move, so it should earn its place rather than being treated as a quick add-on.
Arequipa city
Choose Arequipa when architecture, food and a distinct southern city experience matter more than the lake.
At 10 days, treat Arequipa city as the branch. Do not automatically add Colca as if it were the same extension.
12 DAYS: Arequipa + Colca becomes a stronger branch
At 12 days, an Arequipa + Colca branch becomes a stronger option.
For a 12-day route, keep the final gateway order specific to your trip rather than assuming one fixed exit sequence.
14 DAYS: both southern branches can fit
At 14 days, a longer route can include both Lake Titicaca and Arequipa / Colca.
Possible does not mean relaxed.
The route now has more bases, more highland movement and less resilience if a transfer or booking changes.
Use the extra days to protect pacing rather than treating 14 days as permission to add unrelated regions.
Higher-elevation routing increases planning and pacing demands
Altitude is considered here only for planning and pacing, not as medical or acclimatisation advice.
The useful planning point is simply that a route through Cusco, Titicaca and Colca creates more demanding high-elevation movement than a simpler core.
That should influence how much you add and how tightly you schedule the trip.
Plan transport and gateway order for your trip
The branch choice does not prescribe a fixed air / road / rail sequence. For a 12-day route, the Day 10–12 itinerary and final gateway order remain trip-specific.
Final decision
- 8 DAYS: stop with the core.
- 10 DAYS: add Lake Titicaca OR Arequipa city.
- 12 DAYS: Arequipa + Colca becomes a stronger southern branch.
- 14 DAYS: both southern branches can fit, but the route is still demanding.
Choose the branch by what you actually want from Peru—not by how many pins fit on the map.
