Where to stay in Seoul: Myeongdong, Hongdae or Insadong?

Editorial illustration for Where to stay in Seoul: Myeongdong, Hongdae or Insadong?

Short answer

Myeongdong is the broad first-timer default. It works well for conventional sightseeing, hotel choice, food and easy nightly returns. Choose Hongdae when late evenings, cafés and airport-rail convenience matter more. Choose Insadong/Jongno when the historic core—palaces, traditional streets and older Seoul—is the main daily priority.

Gangnam is an override, not the default: it makes more sense when a large share of the trip is south of the Han River.

Myeongdong: the broad default

Myeongdong is the safest planning default—not a statement about comparative crime or safety. It works because a conventional first trip usually spreads across several parts of central Seoul, and this area offers a broad mix of hotels, food, shopping and straightforward returns after sightseeing.

The exact side of Myeongdong still matters. A hotel closer to a useful station for your repeated routes can be better than a more famous address with an awkward luggage walk.

When Hongdae is better

Hongdae earns the choice when the neighbourhood itself is part of the trip: later evenings, cafés, dining and a more social atmosphere.

Its airport-rail advantage is useful, but do not choose a multi-day base for one airport ride. If several sightseeing days are focused on palaces and the historic core, repeated eastward travel can outweigh the arrival convenience.

Within the wider Hongdae area, the livelier core and calmer Yeonnam-side feel are not identical. Check the actual hotel-to-station walk.

When Insadong/Jongno is better

Insadong/Jongno is the strongest fit when palaces, Bukchon, Jongmyo, traditional streets, galleries and older-neighbourhood atmosphere shape the trip.

There are two different practical versions of this choice. The Jongno side has stronger interchange and later dining; the Anguk/north-Insadong side sits closer to some historic sights but can involve more lane walking and fewer hotel options.

For luggage, families or lower-energy travellers, the easiest station route can matter more than the prettiest lane.

When Gangnam overrides the three headline options

Gangnam makes sense when the itinerary is genuinely south-Seoul-heavy: business, appointments, southern shopping/dining, COEX/Samseong or Jamsil-type priorities.

That is a different trip shape. It is not “inconvenient” in itself; it is simply not the broad default for a first trip dominated by classic central and historic sights.

Time and evening logic

There is no numeric day or night threshold for this choice. Weigh late evenings, nightly returns, classic sightseeing days and one airport ride by how they affect your actual stay.

That makes the nightly return important. Myeongdong is bright and busy; Hongdae is café/bar/street-energy oriented; Insadong/Jongno ranges from quieter historic lanes to livelier Jongno evenings. Choose the place you will be comfortable returning to repeatedly.

The exact hotel test

Before booking, trace one realistic chain:

hotel entrance → useful station exit → first daily ride → evening return → final walk with luggage

A short map distance can still be inconvenient if the relevant entrance, lifts or crossings do not work for your group.

For families and mixed-energy travellers, also test how easy it is to recover at the hotel between outings.

Final decision

No clear special priority? Start with Myeongdong. Choose Hongdae for late-evening life and airport-rail convenience; choose Insadong/Jongno for a historic-core trip; choose Gangnam only when the south-Seoul itinerary genuinely dominates.

Then let the exact station exit and hotel pin confirm—or overturn—the neighbourhood choice.
