Short answer
With 4–5 DAYS, choose Shanghai plus Suzhou or Hangzhou. At 6–7 DAYS, Shanghai → Suzhou → Hangzhou becomes the stronger three-city shape. At 8–10 DAYS, add slower depth rather than automatically adding another city.
The best longer-trip additions are one water-town, tea or wetland layer—not a longer checklist.
In this guide
Use the trip-length bands
| Trip length | Route shape |
|---|---|
| 4–5 DAYS | Shanghai + ONE Jiangnan city |
| 6–7 DAYS | Shanghai → Suzhou → Hangzhou |
| 8–10 DAYS | Keep the three-city core and add slower depth |
At 4–5 days, trying to touch all three cities adds too much hotel/transfer friction for the recommended two-city shape.
Give each city a different job
Shanghai is the modern-city layer: skyline, shopping, neighbourhoods and city energy.
Suzhou is the gardens-and-canals layer: classical gardens, old streets and a slower heritage rhythm.
Hangzhou is the lake-and-tea layer: West Lake, Lingyin/Longjing context and a more scenic finish.
Use one base per city rather than changing hotels inside each city.
Do not turn Suzhou into a half-day
Allow at least ONE FULL DAY for Suzhou, ideally TWO.
Its garden, canal and old-street layer loses value when treated as a quick station stop between Shanghai and Hangzhou.
The same principle applies to Hangzhou: West Lake and its surrounding scenic/cultural layer should not be compressed into a token half-day.
Add depth at 8–10 days
With more time, consider slower depth, such as:
- one water town rather than several
- a Longjing tea layer
- Xixi Wetland
- a slower Suzhou or Hangzhou day
Do not add cities automatically just because the trip reaches 8–10 days.
Family pacing
For families, keep the rhythm simple:
one major morning block → slower afternoon → flexible evening
It also supports:
- one city base at a time
- lighter transfer days
- 1–2 gardens, not a garden marathon
- one water town when it genuinely fits
Final decision
- 4–5 DAYS: Shanghai + Suzhou or Shanghai + Hangzhou
- 6–7 DAYS: the three-city corridor becomes the stronger shape
- 8–10 DAYS: deepen the route instead of widening it
