Short answer
Count FULL SIGHTSEEING DAYS before deciding how many Korean regions to include. For most first-timers, 5–6 full days points to Seoul; 7–8 is the strongest range for Seoul plus one second region; the three-region route needs materially more full sightseeing time plus separate travel intervals.
A seven-night trip is not automatically seven full sightseeing days.
In this guide
Count full sightseeing days correctly
A FULL SIGHTSEEING DAY means:
- you wake in the same region where you will sleep
- there is no international arrival or departure
- there is no hotel-changing regional transfer
- there is no Seoul–Busan move or mainland–Jeju flight built into that day
Arrival, departure and transfer days may still contain sightseeing. They simply should not be counted automatically as full days.
For example:
8 CALENDAR DAYS − arrival − one transfer − departure ≈ 5 FULL SIGHTSEEING DAYS, depending on the actual flight schedule.
That is an example, not a conversion rule for every itinerary.
Choose the region count
| FULL SIGHTSEEING DAYS | Strongest route logic |
|---|---|
| 5–6 | Seoul only is the default. At 6, one second region is possible only when it is a major priority and you accept a faster trip. |
| 7–8 | Choose ONE second region: Seoul + Busan or Seoul + Jeju. |
| 9–10 | Two regions are comfortable; the three-region route enters the faster/compressed end of the range. |
| 11–14 | All three become more practical, with the stronger version protecting more full days in each region. |
A deliberate Busan + Jeju route can work for travellers prioritising coast + nature and intentionally reducing Seoul, but it is a different first-trip choice—not a way to “fit everything.”
Busan or Jeju?
Choose Busan when you want
- a second city with a coastal contrast
- neighbourhoods, food and urban sightseeing
- a route that avoids adding an island flight
Allow 2 NIGHTS as the minimum Busan stop and 3 NIGHTS for a fuller stay.
Choose Jeju when you want
- nature and scenery to be the second-region priority
- a break from the city-led mainland trip
- enough time to absorb the island rather than fly in for a photo stop
For Jeju, 2 FULL DAYS is tight, 3 is practical and 4+ is deeper.
Keep those Jeju full-day units separate from nights and travel days.
If you want all three
An illustrative allocation is:
Seoul 5 FULL DAYS + Busan 3 FULL DAYS + Jeju 4 FULL DAYS = 12 FULL SIGHTSEEING DAYS
That is the sightseeing allocation only.
International arrival/departure, Seoul–Busan movement and mainland–Jeju movement still sit outside those protected full sightseeing days where they involve travel and a region change.
Do not turn the example into a fixed 13-calendar-day itinerary. The total calendar length depends on the actual movement chain.
Final decision
Choose the route by protected full sightseeing days, not by nights on the booking screen.
- Short trip: deepen Seoul.
- Medium trip: add Busan OR Jeju.
- Longer trip: add all three only when the transfer intervals do not cannibalise the full-day allocation.
The best route is the one that leaves enough complete days inside each region.
