Short answer
With 5–7 days, keep Spain focused on one major-city base plus a nearby side trip. At 8–10 days, Madrid + Barcelona or a compact Andalusia route becomes more realistic. At 10–14 days, broader regional depth is possible; 2–3 weeks supports an even wider route.
The important constraint is transfer cost. A train or flight day still uses time for checkout, luggage, stations or airports, arrival and the next hotel. Do not make the route look cleaner by pretending those days disappear.

Choose the route by trip length
| Trip length | Route shape |
|---|---|
| 5–7 DAYS | One main base: Madrid or Barcelona, with a nearby day trip if it fits |
| 8–10 DAYS | Madrid + Barcelona, or a compact Andalusia route |
| 10–14 DAYS | A broader multi-city Spain route with Madrid, Barcelona and selected southern/eastern depth |
| 2–3 WEEKS | Wider regional travel becomes more realistic without changing hotels every night |
These are broad route bands, not promises that every city example fits cleanly inside the lower end of each band.
Keep city-day examples separate
Use the city-level examples as component planning clues, not as a second formula to force into the headline bands:
- Madrid: minimum 3 days; better with 4–5
- Barcelona: minimum 3 days; better with 4–5
- Seville: 2–3 days
- Granada: 2 days
- Córdoba: 1–2 days
- Málaga: 2 days
- Cádiz: 1–2 days
- Ronda: ONE NIGHT or a DAY TRIP
Arrival days, departure days and transfer days remain separate planning units. A late arrival is not the same thing as a full city day.
Choose the regional direction
Madrid + Barcelona is the simplest two-city shape when the trip is built around Spain’s two major urban anchors.
Andalusia is the stronger alternative when Seville, Granada, Córdoba and southern atmosphere matter more than covering both major cities.
Valencia or a coast/island direction is an alternative when beach time, food or a slower regional finish matters more than adding another inland city.
Consider northern Spain for food, scenery and road-trip depth, but treat it as a broader regional alternative—not an automatic addition to a short first trip.
Final decision
Use the trip-length band to decide how many major bases Spain can realistically carry, then choose the regional direction.
Use extra time for fewer hotel changes, clearer regional priorities and honest transfer-day accounting, rather than simply trying to see more.
