Start with the booked hotel entrance, not the airport-to-station time. When trains are running and the hotel connection is manageable, begin with Express MRT to A1 Taipei Main. Compare Commuter MRT for a stop Express skips or a useful later departure. Choose a direct taxi or prebooked transfer when fewer luggage moves and an easier hotel arrival justify the group cost.

Choose the whole arrival
- Express MRT: the starting comparison for straightforward A1 access and a manageable onward journey.
- Commuter MRT: useful for intermediate stops or later rail. Compare the next usable arrival, including waiting, rather than assuming the faster train is always the better departure.
- Direct taxi or prebooked transfer: worth comparing for awkward hotel access, heavy luggage or low energy.
- MRT plus a city taxi: a middle option when the airport rail leg works but the final transfer does not.
- The 1819 coach: a conditional alternative when its actual stop and timetable suit, including after rail closes. It is not an on-demand, door-to-door service.
Find the correct airport station
Terminal 1 uses A12; Terminal 2 uses A13. Complete immigration, baggage collection and customs, then follow Airport MRT signs. There is no need to change terminals to take the train. Check the train direction and stopping pattern for A1 Taipei Main. A18 Taoyuan HSR is a different destination.
Both approved sources (checked 3 and 16 October 2026) compare the same adult A1 fare for Express and Commuter: Commuter is not presented as a cheaper tier. Recheck current fares before travel.
Published train minutes describe time on the train. They omit arrivals formalities, station access, the wait, city transfers and the walk to the hotel. Check current fares and service information for your travel date; dated source examples are not a live quote or timetable.
A1 is an interchange, not the hotel door
Airport MRT and Taipei Metro use separate gates and platforms. Allow for the walking connection, finding lifts and reaching the useful city exit. Red- and blue-line connections involve walking toward Taipei Metro Taipei Main; the green-line connection can use the passage toward Beimen.
For Ximen or Zhongshan, compare walking from A1 to Beimen G13: Ximen G12 is one stop toward Xindian or Taipower Building; Zhongshan G14 is one stop toward Songshan. Confirm the actual service, pay the separate city fare and add the destination-station-to-hotel walk.
A1 has a taxi rank on B1. MRT to A1 followed by a city taxi can avoid another city-rail transfer, but still involves walking through A1 and loading the bags again.
Compare taxi and transfer costs for the actual party
Use the signed official airport taxi rank. Queues and road traffic can still affect the journey. The metered total depends on the address and traffic; motorway tolls are additional. For a prebooked transfer, confirm the total inclusions, meeting point, waiting allowance and flight-delay terms.
Compare the whole-party rail cost plus onward travel with the vehicle total. Confirm actual seats and luggage space before dividing a taxi fare between people: four travellers with four large cases may need a larger vehicle. Check child-fare eligibility separately. Children or older companions do not automatically make one mode preferable.
Check late arrival in two parts
First check the last usable A12/A13 train toward A1. Flight landing time is not the time you reach the platform. Then check the onward city connection. If it has finished, confirm a workable taxi plan from A1.
If airport rail has finished, compare the official airport taxi rank, a confirmed transfer or the 1819 coach where its current departure and stop work. The 1819 serves Taipei Bus Station; check the operator's current timetable and stop, then the remaining walk or taxi to the hotel. Waiting must be acceptable, and a coach seat or immediate departure is not guaranteed. Tell the hotel about a late check-in.
Before you fly
Save the exact entrance and local-language hotel address. Check service alerts, airport terminal, final city connection, payment and the fare basis. Check working lifts, luggage racks, station exits and the hotel's step-free approach. Arrange a child seat or wheelchair-accessible vehicle in advance where needed; an ordinary taxi does not guarantee either.
Plan for the least comfortable traveller in the group. The right answer is the complete arrival you can manage, not simply the shortest rail ride.
