US Southwest First-Timer: Grand Canyon + Page—or Add Moab?

Quick answer

The map makes the Southwest look compact. The route works better when usable road-trip days decide how far you go.

Scroll horizontally to compare all columns.
Usable road-trip timeStrongest starting structure
5 usable road-trip daysGrand Canyon South Rim + Page, returning to Las Vegas.
8 usable road-trip daysAdd Moab only when a Las Vegas / Salt Lake City open-jaw and one-way rental works for your dates.
10 usable road-trip daysKeep the same corridor and buy depth, recovery and weather resilience.

Arrival, departure and rental-car collection are separate planning blocks. A transfer day can still contain useful stops, but it is not the same as a full local day.

In this guide

5 days: stop after Page

With five usable road-trip days, keep the route focused:

Las Vegas → Grand Canyon South Rim → Page → Las Vegas

Protect a proper South Rim block and a proper Page block instead of treating both as drive-through stops.

Skip Moab at this length. The extra distance changes the route from a compact loop into a longer corridor and leaves too little local time at the places that justified the trip.

If you find a sixth day, use it as breathing room rather than automatically adding another park system.

8 days: add Moab only when the route structure works

Moab becomes a meaningful extension when it receives real local time, not a one-night appearance.

The cleaner structure is:

Las Vegas → South Rim → Page → Moab → Salt Lake City

Arches National Park is accessed from the Moab area, and Island in the Sky is the easiest Canyonlands district to combine with a Moab-based first visit. That makes Moab a genuine second park base rather than merely a distant overnight.

But the eight-day version depends on the gateways. Keep the wording conditional: use it when a Las Vegas / Salt Lake City open-jaw and one-way rental works for your dates.

If that structure fails, reverse it, add enough time for the return, or stop after Page.

10 days: deepen the corridor

Ten usable road-trip days do not need to become a race to add Zion, Bryce and more Utah parks.

The stronger use of the extra time is to deepen the same route: another South Rim block, more Page flexibility, a third Moab local day, shorter activity windows, slower driving or a weather/recovery buffer.

More parks are not automatically more value.

Keep the operating details out of the core decision

The South Rim, Arches and Island in the Sky remain established National Park Service visitor areas, but road, park and seasonal conditions can change.

Check current conditions for your dates. Do not build the evergreen route around a temporary closure, a current permit slot, an exact departure minute or a quoted rental drop fee.

The simplest decision

Choose 5 days for a focused South Rim + Page loop with a simple Las Vegas return.

Choose 8 days when Moab is a real priority and the open-jaw structure works.

Choose 10 days when you want the same corridor with more resilience rather than a longer checklist.
